This One's for You Mando!

You are a technical sorta of guy, Mando, yet I know you are interested in your health and wellness, too. I pondered for far too long about how to share my knowledge about food choices and their impact on you, personally.

Here it is in a roundabout way that will cover a lot of bases.

The assessment of tongues used to treat disease goes back to the Shang Dynasty (c. 16th CENTURY B.C.-1066 B.C, according to Beijing: People's Medical Publishing House, 1963, 'Classic of the Spiritual Axis (Ling Shu Jing)).

Check out my colleague, Giovanni Maciocia's book for more about the history of tongue assessments. While in graduate school, a professor recounted a story he had read in an old Tibetan book about the mountain roads of the Himalayas and its travelers. It was said to have been a habit to show one's tongue to others met upon the road, similarly to how a handshake is a method of greeting and also forming trust with a stranger. We may wonder why the tongue and not the hand?

In China, there are textbooks with hundreds, if not thousands of people's tongues and the diagnosis associated with each photo. Perhaps sharing a view of your tongue was a way of offering the condition of your health for another to accept or reject your company.

Mando, I have included the picture above of a tongue diagram with areas circled and bordered with specific colors. These colors are: red, the area surround by grey was to be white however on the white background it would not have been evident, green, orange/yellow, and purple.

These five colors and the region on the tongue they represent, correlate to the five primary organ systems of the body:
  • Red = Heart
  • White = Lungs (this area is circled in grey, yet is intended to be white)
  • Green = Liver
  • Orange/Yellow = Spleen/pancreas
  • Purple = Kidneys (purple ranges from blue to indigo)

These same colors can be matched to foods in order for their energy to be delivered to that associated organ system.
  • Red foods affect the Heart
  • White foods affect the Lungs
  • Green foods affect the Liver
  • Orange/Yellow foods affect the Spleen/Pancreas
  • Purple, blue, black foods affect the Kidneys

Now lets discuss the flavor of foods and their role in directing nutrients in the body:
  • Bitter flavor acts on the Heart, cools, and moves downward and inward
  • Pungent, Spicy flavor acts on the Lungs, warming and moving upward and outward
  • Sour flavor acts on the Liver to cool and collect inward, astringe
  • Sweet flavor acts on the Spleen/Pancreas, warming and moving upward and outward
  • Salty flavor acts on the Kidneys, cooling while drawing water downward
Today, when forming a diagnosis for a patient in an acupuncturist office, you will be asked to show your tongue, respond to The 10 Questions, your pulses will be felt, and your body will be observed, and if necessary touched.

Here in the world of the internet, we do well to use a webcam and microphone to cover much of the assessment and form a plan of care.

Here are a couple of simplified examples of what we may see and what may be recommended to change the pattern of behavior or body functions.
  1. You have hiccups.
    • Reduce the upward flow of air and possibly food by adding a bitter flavored item on your tongue. This could be green tea, coffee, asparagus.
      • As you will note, each one of these foods and beverages have a distinct bitter flavor, which moves downward and inward
  2. You have heart palpitations and feel warm.
    • Your heart can be cooled with red tomatoes [lycopene]
      • Color=Red / Flavor=Sour, bitter, sweet, cooling
    • Or by eating beet roots
      • Color=Red / Flavor Bitter, sweet, neutral temp-not warm or cold
    • Or watermelon
      • Color=Red / Sweet
      • You can see we are using color to target the heart and temperature to cool it
Now you know the major principles, Mando. They may seem very simple and yet the overlay of each can and do depend on each individual constitution, the foods they currently consume, activity level and then there is the geographic climate where a person lives.

Any questions? Send Sofi@TheSpiritofFood.com your thoughts and she will directly respond. Think you would like to host a Tongue Talk at your workplace?

We will bring our cameras and charts to help you discover your own unique body's needs, and we will show you how the help it function well to support your happy life. Be Happy.

It will be interesting to watch the changes in people's choices of healthy foods to maintain a sense of wellness as the planet gets warmer and the waters rise. What do you think?

Traumatic Brain Injury aka TBI and Food Selections

We are venturing into the Brain, on this post at a request from V [a computer tech].  to address health challenges related to areas of the brain and their body counter-parts.

More specifically, we will talk a bit about the occiput area where eyesight is housed, theoretically. Yet, according to Dr. Candace Pert, one of the first women physicians to produce study results at the National Institutes of Health, we have receptors throughout the body. Who knows exactly where the final resting place of our eyesight is translated and redistributed throughout the body channels leading to vision?

We are so complex and adaptive in our bodies that there have been, what are referred to as miracles recorded every day when a newly observed thing appears. WE learn to connect the ink on a printed page together to form and signal to our brain, where the vision is translated to chemical signals, which seek out the data to interpret the word into meaning. This works faster when it is a familiar item, such as this walnut. What if it is completely new and foreign. Babies begin without patterns of vision until they associated them with sounds, smells, touch and emotions, forming a pattern.

Yet, the miracles that each individual life is, can not be denied as distinct. Those of us who have birthed more than one child know this. Each child came with some of their own marks to be made in this lifetime that are unknown to even us, their parents.

So what happens when our database [The Brain] becomes shattered, the battery looses charge. There is a blue screen with nothing else on it. At one time, it was believed that there was no way to restore memory following a Traumatic Brain Injury.  Yet this too has proven false. There have been numerous cases where a significant shock damaged the brain, yet statistics show, over time that same brain can return to 'normal' functionality.  There can be an almost complete reversal of the impact's consequences other than the recovery time spent for the healing process to work.

Beyond all of this is scientific proof by not only Dr. Pert, we also have a living example in Dr. Bruce H. Lipton, cell biologist and author of several books. My current favorite,The Biology of Belief, may be a bit tedious for the average reader. The truth is Dr. Lipton and a number of his professional peers have proven it is NOT the DNA which triggers the body's response to a perceived invasion; it is our perception of that invasion or change in our environment represents a negative occurrence and requires a defensive response for survival. For another person, that same event may be perceived as a positive event, triggering a completely different response, which may include a cascade of dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins. This newly established scientific set of premises is now commonly referred to as Epigenetics.

What does this all mean? My own understanding is that we, as humans, have far more power and choice about how our bodies function, adapt, and recreate our functionality again, and then that cycle appears over and over as we adapt, and create new growth, pruning or additions in the development in our unique lives.

To bring this full circle for you as we have allowed ourselves to open our minds to a completely new horizon, what will we do now?

Here they are again in a consolidated format, which can be unzipped and used to treat thousands of maladies. I hope you will try it out and ask us questions how to do so.

Several long-recognized patterns that have been developed by multiple cultures over a very long period of time are the principles which are the underpinnings for FOOD PHYSICS & BODY DYNAMICS, to be used as a tool to assist in adapting and in the healing process.

The following are a couple of tips and suggestions about managing vision and eye challenges directly requested by V. Be sure to let me know which ones you choose to use and how they are working for you, or not.

Tip# 1. Try using yellow notepads, yellow highlighters, looking at yellow flowers, paint your dining room a shade of yellow. Why? Scientifically, the shapes cells on your retina [rods and cones] capture and translate light waves into data. It has been proven, more activity occurs when they are exposed to yellow light, compared to any other.

Tip #2. Eating dark leafy green vegetables regularly allows the liver organ system to clear out toxins and deliver cleaner, richer red bloods and helps to release the toxin build up in the liver as well.

Tip #3. Lastly, this has more to do with the circulation, and resting balance of the [6]6 tiny tendons that suspend and move the eyeballs to facilitate full vision. When using your vision function for long periods of time; stop every 10-15 minutes and roll your eyes, rotate your neck, look at something far away for a few moments, then something up very close. You are stimulating the blood in those adorable [6] tiny tendons, to revitalize your vision!

Always learning as we share our experiences.
May you and yours..Be In Good Health.

ACNE, PIMPLES, BLACKHEADS? - PUBERTY or WRONG FOOD CHOICES?

Often time, especially during puberty, the appearance of either blackheads or pimples, the white puffy kind, forms on the facial skin. This can happen most frequently around time when there is additional hormonal flare ups. For young women this can be associated with the onset or aftermath of their monthly menstruation, while in young males, it can be more often triggered by emotional stimulation. And for both young women and men, the foods they are choosing can exacerbate the condition [make it worse].

So how do you deal with these unpleasant and unattractive marks, when it seems you have little control over them! Just think of all the power these little dots on your face can wield.
Well, you may have more control over them if you apply some Food Physics & Body Dynamics [FPBD] principles. Here are a few ways to send the dots [acne] a’packin, leaving you with a clear complexion and even more pleasant attitude.

Two things FPBD principles guide you to consider using when bothered by these dotty bumps:
1.       Avoid any show or feelings of anger instead try any one or more of these techniques:
a.       Meditation, clear your mind
b.      Go for a walk, run, swim, hike, bike, garden, blow bubbles, and release your emotions
c.       Visualize good things, think happy thoughts, sing a happy song, hum
2.       Change the foods you choose to consume most often
a.       Learn to love, love, love, dark leafy green vegetables1.
b.      Avoid eating sweetened and spicy foods in the same meal2.

Your liver organ system is designed to manage the flow of hormones, both insulin [sugar/sweet food management] and to purify the blood to be circulated throughout all your body systems. Known as the General in Traditional Oriental Medicine, the quality of our liver function sets the stage for our daily life activities and is in a regenerative mode at night. So a good night’s sleep will also be helpful in reducing acne and is often missing in the lives of youth in development.

Oh and one more thing may be especially helpful; avoid touching your face with unwashed hands. For those of you who experience extra blotches compared with most of those around you, your bodies are in a very prolific, creative mode. So don’t rub your skin with dirt to create moundsJ, instead keep hands and face well washed with a mild soap. Avoid over-drying your skin with alcohol based soaps. As you can see, it is a balancing act, just like a teeter-totter on the playground, or a roller coaster or LIFE!

Learn to look for balance, it lies closer to the middle of up and down, hot or cold, high or low, tight or lose, joyful or sad. This can be a learning expertise in self-discipline, which is a real value. With self-discipline, you are bigger than those DOTS that used to glare at you in the mirror each morning.
1.
     1. The liver organ system loves green foods due to the cleansing nature of chlorophyll, often the primary factor in food with the color green. This can reduce toxins in the organ system.
a.       Dark green vegetable that are leafy, tend to be bitter. This bitter flavor is a natural diuretic; meaning it helps to reduce excess fluid in the body. Thus the purifying green is lifting the toxins to be drained from the body by bitter flavor;a truly lovely complimentary pair.
b.      Here are some dark leafy green to consider: artichokes, kale, collards, turnip greens, spinach, Swiss chard, green leaf teas, mustard greens, dandelion greens, watercress, chives and scallion greens.

2.

    2. The directions of both spicy and sweetened foods, tend to move the energy within the body systems upward and outward. This will direct any fluid or functions upward, lifting any toxins in the blood flow toward the facial area. Thus breakouts through the pores of the skin happen; Yuk!

a.       Both bitter and salty flavored foods will counteract the upward and outward movement of energy in the body, albeit water, blood, or lymph waste, and feces.
b.      Foods that are bitter as you will notice in footnote #1 can helpful. Although salty flavored foods move downward, too much of these foods or added salt at the table, can store water in the body and cause bloating.

Self-Disciple is important when eating extreme flavors. Too often this can cause the DOTS to reappear, where they can be great for special treats and moments of celebration.
MAY YOU BE IN GOOD HEALTH!

BUSINESS CARDS FRONT AND BACK, $5 FOR 500!

Got so excited when the coupon came in the mail. Just in time for the relaunch of my website and blog, I rushed into the postal store to collect on the opportunity. Yet the young man behind the counter could not help me. He was vague and sent me by to my office to figure out how to capitalize. Their coupon claimed for $5. USD, they would produce 500 business cards with print on both front and back! Unheard of in this day and age of color printing.

Yet, I bet each one of you have seen an offer similar to this; maybe Free tickets to hear Bruce Springsteen, or Bob Marley. You knew it would not last and you knew you were meant to see the ad, and you knew you were going to reap the benefits. I knew.

It was just a matter of the process to get from not having a current business card to having 500, full color, two-sided, beautiful business cards to share with potential customers/patients. And the cost was a mere $5.00!

Not to be deterred by the baffling clerk, I rethought what he seemed to have told me to do. It just was NOT clear. So I took another trip to the store. Lo and behold, he was still there, guarding me from enjoying the benefit of the coupon. He gave me a few more confusing statements to which I shrugged my shoulders and left. How was this going to work out?

Knowing there was a solution, knowing the offer had come at just the right time, for just the right amount of money and was exactly what I had been toying with purchasing just before receiving the coupon in the mail. I was determined and intrigued by the confusion it was causing in my own mind.

Printing off copies of the most recent business card, then preparing a copy of what I wanted to see on the back, I felt armed. Adding to it a cheerful attitude, I motored off to the store to engage their work.
I walked in and was greeted by a bright young woman, the graphic artist who would prepare my 500, front and back printed business cards. We were both delighted to see one another and look at my samples of what was to be the final card.

Two days later, the cards were ready to be shared at one of the most important business meetings I could imagine up to that point in my business career.

You may be really baffled and wondering what all of this has to do with Tongue Fu, nutrition, food preparation, health and wellness.

Truth is, for me to follow all of these steps, was so much a part of the final outcome. It would appear, my energy and desire to have benefited by the coupon and enjoy sharing these beautiful cards with people seeking my help charged my cards and me, with a special force.

We hope you find the search and discovery of your own greater sense of health & wellness to be rewarding, each step of the way.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - Let's get you off the pot and back in the driver's seat!

"Definition: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon). Irritable bowel syndrome commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation. IBS is a chronic condition that you will need to manage long term." [See Mayo Clinic Definition here-http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/basics/definition/con-20024578]
Symptoms
By Mayo Clinic StaffThe signs and symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome can vary widely from person to person and often resemble those of other diseases. Among the most common are:
  • Abdominal pain or cramping
  • A bloated feeling
  • Gas
  • Diarrhea or constipation — sometimes alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea
  • Mucus in the stool
For most people, IBS is a chronic condition, although there will likely be times when the signs and symptoms are worse and times when they improve or even disappear completely."
**********************
Let us take a look at this in relation to 'Food Physics & Body Dynamicstm', where if you eat a bitter food, it tends to move downward in the body systems, as does a salty food. Sweet and spicy flavors both encourage upward actions, affecting lung and digestive function in that same direction. And then there is the astringent nature of a sour food, aka a lemon, which will tighten and lock the food stuff in the digestive tract.
Apply these food directional functions to the foods consumed by a person suffering from IBS and you may discover a solution. Using a food journal, analyze the direction of the foods consumed, and note the time of day.
NOTE: If the IBS person eats erratically each day, this will further exacerbate the condition, as well as will consuming unsanitary foods, which have been handled or have debris which add a load of bacteria. Now you have an IBS cocktail.
Digestion is a downward bearing function from mouth to anus, making it beneficial to know how to keep foods down and completely digested.
Please ask us how to do this, if you want to get off the pot and back into the driver's seat!
